Most Romanians prefer their next president to be pro-European

An INSCOP poll conducted before the first round of the presidential election showed that 70% of Romanians favoured a pro-European and experienced president, according to Euractiv.

Meanwhile, 17.1% would prefer an east-oriented candidate, 3.9% considered this aspect to be irrelevant, and 11.5% found it difficult to answer or refused to respond. The presidential election will take place on 24 November.

According to the survey, the majority who would support Mircea Geoană or Elena Lasconi also were backers of the USR, people under 30 years old, with higher education, residents of Bucharest and other large cities.

70.6% of respondents favoured an experienced candidate, whereas 24.5% would prefer to have a younger president. Another 3.7% considered it unimportant, and 1.2% found it difficult to answer or did not respond.

Romanians are also divided on political views. About half prefer an independent president, whereas the other half favours a president affiliated with a political party. INSCOP Research CEO Remus Åžtefureac said:

These general preferences are particularly relevant for the second round of the presidential elections.

The presidential campaign officially started on Friday. In the first round on 24 November, Romanians will choose among 14 candidates. 10 of them belong to political parties and four are independent candidates.
