Electricity cost in Portugal lower than EU average

Average electricity prices in Portugal were lower than in Spain in the first half of the year and lower than the European Union average, The Portugal News reports.

According to the Electricity Price Comparison Bulletin issued by the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE), based on data from the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), average electricity prices in Spain during the first six months of this year were 5 per cent and 13 per cent higher than Portuguese prices, for the domestic and non-domestic segment, respectively.

In the first half of the year, Portugal recorded a 15 per cent increase in electricity prices in the domestic segment compared to the same six months of the previous year, “which is mainly due to the fact that CIEG (costs of general economic interest) returned to registering positive values, after the negative values of the previous six months,” ERSE pointed out.

In turn, Spain saw a 16 per cent decrease in electricity prices compared to the same half-year, as well as the euro area and the European Union by 13 per cent in both cases. Nevertheless, the average price in Portugal remains below the average prices in Spain, the European Union and the euro area.

In the domestic sector, the average price in Portugal was €0.2539 per kilowatt hour (kWh), while in Spain it was €0.2657 per kWh.

The average price in the EU was €0.3010 per kWh (+19% compared to Portugal), while in the euro area it was €0.3195 per kWh (+26% compared to Portugal).

In the non-household sector, Portugal averaged 0.1332 euros per kWh, Spain 0.1501 (+13%), the EU 0.1970 (+48%) and the euro area 0.2033 (+53%).

In the EU context, until the end of June, average electricity prices for the household segment were lowest in Hungary, Bulgaria, Malta and Croatia, while they were highest in Germany, Ireland, Denmark and the Czech Republic.

For the non-domestic segment, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Bulgaria had the lowest average electricity prices during the period, while Ireland, Cyprus, Croatia, Germany and Germany had the highest.
