Uttarakhand bus crash claims 36 lives in India

At least 36 people were killed when a bus fell into a 200-metre-deep gorge in the Indian state of Uttarakhand on Monday, Indian media reported.

The incident took place on a mountain road near the town of Marchula. The 45-year-old driver failed to control the vehicle on a difficult section, causing the vehicle to fall into a chasm from a height of 200 metres.

As a result of the accident, 36 people were killed and 10 others were injured, at least five citizens were reported missing.

The injured were rushed to the nearest medical centres for treatment. Rescue operations are underway at the accident site and police are investigating the incident.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and directed to take immediate steps to provide relief to the victims.

In a statement on website X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed “deepest condolences to those who lost their loved ones in the road accident.” A statement from Modi’s office said the families of the deceased would receive assistance of 200,000 rupees ($2,380), while the injured would receive 50,000 rupees ($595).
