EU mobilises €5 million for displaced people in Syria

In light of the ongoing escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which has caused massive displacement and the crossing of people from Lebanon into Syria, the European Commission has allocated an additional €5 million to address the most urgent humanitarian needs of people crossing into Syria.

The new allocation aims to scale up humanitarian support to both Syrians and Lebanese, helping displaced people and host communities meet urgent needs such as food aid, health and protection.

Aid will be channelled through EU humanitarian partners, who are already responding to the displacement crisis in Syria, to ensure that critical assistance to people arriving quickly.

In May, the EU pledged €1bn to Lebanon to support the country’s economy and help stem the flow of Syrian refugees travelling from there to Europe.

The EU has previously concluded similar agreements, called in the media “money for migrants,” with Egypt (for 7.4 billion euros), Mauritania (about 200 million euros) and Tunisia (for 1 billion euros)
