North Korea is dismantling power transmission lines leading to the closed Kaesong Industrial Park in the North Korean border city of Kaesong, the Korean media reported, citing the South Korean military.
According to Seoul, soldiers of the Korean People’s Army began work from November 24 and have already dismantled power lines in some sections between transmission towers along the Kaesong Road.
South Korean authorities expect the DPRK to dismantle the transmission line towers, which have been out of service since June 2020, when power supply was cut off after the bombing of the inter-Korean liaison office in Kaesong.
The transmission lines were built by the South Korean side. A total of 48 towers have been installed to supply electricity to the industrial complex, 15 of which are on DPRK territory.
North and South Koreas are separated by a 4 km wide demilitarised zone. Earlier this year, the DPRK planted mines and dismantled lighting on its side of the border. In October, North Korean authorities announced plans to block transport links to the southern part of the Korean Peninsula and build new defences in border areas.
