Arsonists set fire to synagogue in Melbourne

Firefighters were called to the Adass Israel Synagogue early Friday morning after reports that the building was engulfed in flames, Australian media reported.

According to community leaders, there were “several people” in the building at the time, who were performing morning prayers. Police are now searching for two men believed to be behind the attack who were wearing masks at the time.

Rabbi Gabi Kaltmann said the “two thugs” smashed the windows of the synagogue, poured fuel on the floor and then set it on fire.

The congregants inside “heard banging on the door, the window and some liquids that caught fire. It all happened quite quickly,” synagogue councillor Benjamin Klein said.

Detective Inspector Chris Murray said:

“We believe it was done deliberately. We believe it was done on purpose. But we don’t know why and we will find out why.”

In a statement, Anthony Albanese condemned the attack, saying it was “clearly intended to instil fear in the community.” He said:

“I have zero tolerance for antisemitism. This violence and intimidation and destruction at a place of worship is an outrage. This attack has risked lives and is clearly aimed at creating fear in the community.”

Albanese also said he had been informed by the Australian Federal Police, who are providing additional support in the area. He added:

“The people involved must be caught and face the full force of the law.”

Police officials emphasised that in the coming days, as part of the arson investigation, forensic experts will examine the scene and determine the type of incendiary mixture used to set fire to the synagogue.

The footage from all street surveillance cameras in the area will also be thoroughly analysed to establish which car the suspects used to arrive at and flee the scene of the incident. In addition, police are counting on the help of residents who may know the attackers.
