Ali Hassan Al-Ali, a Lebanese man detained in Syria for 40 years, is now free. Local officials and media confirmed his release from Hama Prison, bringing renewed hope to families of those missing since the Lebanese Civil War.
A step forward amid uncertainty
The Committee of Families of Kidnapped and Disappeared in Lebanon verified Al-Ali’s identity. Reports indicate that other Lebanese detainees may also have been freed, though their exact number remains unclear. Photos and videos of Al-Ali’s release have circulated widely, fuelling speculation about more potential releases.
The committee urged the Lebanese government to act immediately. It asked for an emergency effort to confirm identities, facilitate the return of those released, and engage with Syrian authorities. During Syria’s military presence in Lebanon (1976–2005), many Lebanese were detained. Arrests often targeted those opposing Syrian control or accused of collaboration. Syrian authorities deny allegations that hundreds remain imprisoned, despite evidence from advocacy groups.
Al-Ali’s release occurred during escalating conflict in Syria. Anti-regime forces, led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, have captured key areas since late November, including parts of central Aleppo and, more recently, Hama. These developments may create opportunities for more releases, but the volatile situation complicates efforts to secure the safe return of detainees.
