Swedish royal family attends Princess Birgitta’s funeral in Stockolm

Princess Birgitta of Sweden was buried at the Royal Cemetery in Haga Park. The private funeral and burial of King Carl Gustaf’s elder sister took place on Sunday.

The royal family and close friends attended the private funeral and burial. Members of the media were not allowed to attend the funeral, but they were allowed to take pictures as the guests and hearse approached the royal chapel at Drottningholm Palace.

The royal court later published an image of the memorial wreaths sent by Birgitta’s siblings (King Carl Gustaf, Princess Margareta, Princess Desiree and Princess Christina) and their families.

On the same day, the traditional Seraphim Ringing Ceremony took place at Riddarholm Church. This ceremony is held on the day of the funeral of any Knight of the Order of Seraphim.

Meanwhile, in the Knight’s Hall of the Royal Palace, those wishing to attend could leave notes of condolence for the Royal Family.

Princess Birgitta passed away on December 4 at the age of 87 in Mallorca, Spain.

Princess Birgitta was both traditional and innovative. Birgitta believed that certain traditions should be strictly followed. For example, she did not like it when the King handed out the titles of Prince and Princess to newly arrived family members, however, she only did so because Birgitta had lived through a time when such titles were painfully taken away from her uncles who had decided to marry for love.
