The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are losing positions in several regions, whereas Russian troops continue to push Ukrainian soldiers out of the Kursk region, according to Ukrainian media.
The Ukrainian military reported that Russian forces advanced along the river north-west of Uspenivka, entered Zelenivka and captured a neighbourhood of high-rise buildings in Kurakhove. Meanwhile, the AFU controlled only the industrial area of the Kurakhove thermal power plant.
In the Pokrovsk area, Russian units advanced from the village of Pushkino to Ukrainka. According to Ukrainian sources, the AFU attempted to counterattack along the entire front from Novotroitske to Shevchenko village. However, other sources reported that Russian soldiers took Sevchenko, now advancing towards Pokrovsk.
Ukrainian analysts also noted a further Russian advance west of Velyka Novosilka. Russian group of troops Vostok deployed another armoured squad to the village of Novyi Komar and landed infantry.
The loss of defensive positions in southern and southeastern Ukraine could be linked to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s military gamble in Russia’s Kursk region, analysts argue. The Russian troops’ offensive continues in a number of areas at once, from Plyokhovo to Cherkasskaya Konopelka and Novoivanovka, Sudzha district.
Ukrainian troops reportedly lost their strongholds in the forest belt. Meanwhile, Russian forces advanced up to 1.5 kilometres.
Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting of the Defence Ministry board that Russian troops had seized 189 towns, villages and cities in Ukraine in 2024.
