China has strongly criticised the United States for approving additional military aid to Taiwan. The Chinese government warned that the US is “playing with fire” and creating unnecessary tension.
On Saturday, the US approved a new military package worth up to $571 million (£454 million). This includes defence equipment, services, and further military training for Taiwan’s armed forces. In addition, on Friday, the US Department of Defence authorised military sales valued at $295 million (£234 million).
In response, China’s Foreign Ministry urged the US to stop sending arms to Taiwan. They stated that these actions undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, an area of ongoing concern.
Taiwan is a democratic island with a population of 23 million. China regards it as a part of its territory, despite Taiwan’s strong opposition. Beijing has long pressured Taiwan to reunite with the mainland, but the island remains resistant.
The US military aid is designed to help Taiwan defend itself from potential Chinese aggression. This support aims to strengthen Taiwan’s defences and deter China from military action in the future.
This recent approval follows a similar package in late September, which totalled $567 million (£441 million). That assistance included essential equipment such as tactical radios and gun mounts to enhance Taiwan’s defences.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the US decision. They highlighted that this continued support reaffirms America’s commitment to Taiwan’s security and sovereignty, which are vital to the island’s future.
