The British Foreign Secretary on Tuesday expressed concern over the “deeply alarming” situation in Sudan and called for immediate action.
David Lammy, referring to the recently published Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IFSPC) study on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, said the country’s 24 million people are suffering from rapidly increasing famine and starvation.
“Urgent action is needed to find a political solution and prevent further suffering,” Lammy wrote on X, calling the situation on the ground as “deeply alarming.”
An IFSPC report released on Tuesday said famine in North Darfur is expected to spread further over the next year.
The Integrated Food Security Classification estimates that more than 24.6 million people in Sudan face severe food insecurity. The situation is expected to worsen, with projections indicating that famine conditions could spread to other regions by May 2025.
Despite some agricultural successes due to favourable rains, ongoing violence has severely hampered agricultural operations, resulting in massive crop failure and abandonment of fields. The humanitarian situation remains critical, requiring urgent international intervention to mitigate suffering and promote a sustainable ceasefire.
