Former Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, urged Uruguay to join the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) negotiations, according to bne IntelliNews.
Rousseff, who heads the NDB, invited President-elect Yamandú Orsi on Friday, emphasising that BRICS would not set any “macroeconomic conditions” as the US-backed International Monetary Fund (IMF) does.
Uruguay is perfectly positioned to be given credit. (…) For us, it is important that Uruguay participates in the bank.
Uruguay’s membership process “is almost concluded” and “has already been approved by the board of governors.” However, approval by various institutional bodies, including Congress, was still pending, Rousseff added.
Orsi, who takes office on 1 March, nevertheless said Uruguay would not seek membership of the BRICS bloc like Argentina, which withdrew from the group after the election of Javier Milei. He emphasised that Uruguay was not looking at specific credits but “a line of work” to explore.
Today’s world is complex and opportunities for resources, financing, and support should not be overlooked.
