German Christmas Magdeburg attack death toll rises to six

The death toll in a car collision with visitors to a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg has risen to six after a 52-year-old woman died in hospital from her injuries, prosecutors said on Monday.

Prosecutors in Naumburg said the 52-year-old woman died in hospital, German news agency dpa reported. Authorities said the dead included four women aged 45, 52, 67 and 75, as well as a 9-year-old boy.

On December 20, an attacker deliberately steered his car into a crowd at a Christmas fair in Magdeburg. More than 200 people were injured as a result. The victims of the attack were five people – a child and four women. The authorities called what happened a terrorist attack.

The driver of the car was 50-year-old native of Saudi Arabia Taleb al-Abdulmohsen. The man moved to Germany in 2006 and was granted political refugee status in 2016. According to Der Spiegel, in his home country he was accused of slave trade. Al-Abdulmohsen worked as a psychiatrist and was active on social media, where he often criticised Islam.

The attack on the Christmas market provoked mass protests in Germany demanding the deportation of illegal migrants. Demonstrators blamed the authorities, especially Olaf Scholz, for the incident. The chancellor was even booed during his appearance at a mourning event at the end of December.
