Houthis target US aircraft carrier in Red Sea

Yemen’s Houthis (Ansarallah) have announced a military operation targeting a US aircraft carrier in the Red Sea.

According to Yahya Saree, spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces, the attack involved cruise missiles and drones, focusing on the USS Harry S. Truman and accompanying warships in the northern Red Sea. Saree claimed the operation, lasting nine hours, had achieved its objectives by forcing the carrier to withdraw further north in the Red Sea.

This marked the fifth reported targeting of the carrier since it arrived in the region, Saree noted in his statement.

On Friday, an escalation was seen in Yemen’s conflict when over 20 airstrikes were conducted on the capital, Sanaa, and the port city of Hodeidah. This represented a coordinated effort by Israel and the US-UK Coalition, targeting underground installations, ballistic missile depots, and drone storage facilities.

Houthi-affiliated media, Al-Masirah TV, reported that the strikes also hit civilian infrastructure, including the Haziz power plant and areas near Al-Sabeen Square during a demonstration in solidarity with Gaza.

The Houthis have intensified attacks on Israeli-linked vessels in the Red Sea since November 2023, stating their actions are part of their support for Gaza. In response, joint airstrikes by US and UK forces early in 2024 caused substantial losses to Houthi positions and infrastructure. The group has since declared all US and UK vessels as military targets, broadening their operations to include the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, and other nearby waterways.
