Vučić to meet EU leaders to discuss the Kosovo situation

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić discussed the situation in Kosovo with the Big Five on Saturday, announcing his trip to Brussels on Thursday or Friday, according to Euractiv.

Vučić met with European envoy Miroslav Lajčak, American envoy to the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar, French and German advisors Emanuel Bonn and Jens Plettner, as well as the diplomatic adviser to Italian Prime Minister, Francesco Talo.

Earlier, The Big Five arrived in Pristina, where Lajčak announced a plan to continue the dialogue, without, however, revealing any details.

We expect both sides to start fulfilling obligations from both old and new agreements. The dialogue will be on the agenda of Monday’s foreign ministers of European countries meeting, but will also be discussed by European leaders later in the week.

The Serbian President described the meeting as difficult and stated that he hoped for important talks in Brussels in the coming days. Vučić told TV Pink that any discussion of Kosovo “is difficult today”.

“Basically, the politics are such that Pristina always has the upper hand because 22 of 27 EU countries, the most powerful ones, have recognised Kosovo’s independence and the US. Then you see how things are. But I believe we will find a way out.”

He announced that he would travel to Brussels on Thursday or Friday to discuss the situation over Kosovo. Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić may also be in Brussels following a trip to New York, but on a different issue.

At the EU summit on 26-27 October, European leaders will discuss Kosovo and draw conclusions on the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue. RTS reports that eleven EU countries have requested sanctions against Serbia if the Banjska investigation proves Belgrade’s involvement.

The European Commission has already drawn up a series of measures in case Serbia refuses to participate in a full investigation into the September 24 terrorist attack or if its involvement is proven.
