EU consumer prices rose by 2.4% year-on-year in December

Consumer prices in the eurozone rose by 2.4% year-on-year in December, according to final data from the European Union’s statistical office Eurostat.

Inflation accelerated from November’s 2.2%, to the highest since July. The final data matched both the preliminary estimate and analysts’ expectations.

Inflation in the services sector accelerated to 4 per cent last month from 3.9 per cent in November, while price growth in food, alcohol and tobacco products slowed to 2.6 per cent from 2.7 per cent. Industrial products rose in price by 0.5% (0.6%) and energy by 0.1% (down 2% in November).

The lowest inflation among the eurozone countries was registered in Ireland (1%) and Italy (1.4%), the highest – in Croatia (4.5%).

Consumer price growth excluding the cost of food and energy (CPI Core) was 2.7% year-on-year in December, the same as in the previous month.

Consumer prices in the eurozone in December increased by 0.4% compared to the previous month. In November, the index decreased by 0.3%.
