Kenya sends 217 police to Haiti for UN mission

Kenya has deployed an additional 217 police officers to Haiti as part of a UN-supported mission aimed at addressing gang violence and restoring stability. The officers arrived on Saturday, with the Kenyan presidency confirming their arrival. They were greeted by Haitian President Fritz Alphonse Jean and other senior government officials.

The officers’ primary duties will include protecting civilians and maintaining public order. They will also assist in the reform of Haiti’s law enforcement agencies. Their roles will involve patrolling, community policing, and training local police officers.

Kenya first sent 400 officers to Haiti in June to support the UN mission. President William Ruto has expressed confidence in the officers’ abilities. He highlighted their professionalism, integrity, and expertise.

The Kenyan police have made notable strides in improving security in Haiti, despite the challenging environment. The country has struggled with gang violence and political instability for years. The rise in kidnappings, robberies, and murders has made violent crime a daily reality for many Haitians.

Haiti has been seeking international help to restore security. The US has pledged $300 million to the UN-led Multinational Security Support mission, while Canada has contributed $123 million. This includes $80.5 million for the UN trust fund. Jamaica and Senegal have also provided support by deploying security personnel.
