Romanian party leads protests against cancelled presidential election

Members of the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR) protested in Bucharest last weekend, according to Euractiv.

The protesters demanded a second round of the cancelled presidential election, according to AUR leader George Simion.

We continue to protest because the usurper president and the traitorous government refuse to listen to the people! They have not given us any answers, they have not taken any measures!

Independent candidate Călin Georgescu unexpectedly won the first round of the 24 November presidential election. In response, the Romanian Constitutional Court ruled that the first round should be cancelled and a complete re-vote should be held without a run-off.

Reacting to the court’s decision, AUR representatives stated that the cancellation of the presidential election was “disrespectful” to the millions of Romanians calling for the second round.

Romanians have woken up! And they will continue to protest for a sovereign Romania, where decisions are made in the interest of the people.

The protesters also demanded the resignation of President Klaus Iohannis, whose term had expired but who remained in office awaiting a successor. Although new presidential elections are scheduled for 4 and 18 May, it is unclear whether Georgescu will run again.
