MEPs demand new gas price cap

A coalition of left-wing MEPs is calling on the European Commission to extend the EU gas price cap, as Europe’s winter gas reserves are rapidly depleting, according to Euractiv.

The temporary gas price cap was set at €180 per MWh in 2022. As it expires on 1 February, MEPs warn that without action, “Europe may remain at the mercy of speculators.”

In a letter to European commissioners, including President Ursula von der Leyen, 34 leftists and three EU lawmakers from the ECR argued in favour of prolonging the price cap. The document was initiated by Italian MEP Dario Tamburrano and signed by Nicolás González Casares from Spain and the Greens’ Michael Bloss from Germany.

The MEPs are calling on the Commission to propose a lower limit. Rome has previously set the cap at around €50-60 per MWh.
