Deadly Israeli raid in Jenin leads to mass displacement

Israeli troops continued their military operation in the northern West Bank town of Jenin and refugee camp for the third consecutive day, intensifying a standoff that has displaced hundreds of people and provoked a sharp reaction from Palestinian factions.

Israeli forces continue Jenin Operation for third day

Palestinian media reported that Israeli troops brought additional reinforcements, including military bulldozers, to the outskirts of the camp. The soldiers forced hundreds of Palestinian families to evacuate, subjecting residents to thorough checks, and arrested at least 10 people, including women. Bulldozers continued to destroy infrastructure and the main entrance to the public hospital.

Snipers positioned on rooftops fired at anyone who moved, while military vehicles patrolled the streets of the camp.

In response, the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, and the Al-Quds Brigades battalion of Islamic Jihad in Jenin claimed responsibility for the intense clashes with Israeli troops. The groups said they used firearms and improvised explosive devices in “direct strikes against Israeli soldiers.”

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the Jenin operation reflected lessons learned from events in Gaza.

Israel-Hezbollah truce set to be extended beyond next week

The ceasefire agreement that has halted the war between Israel and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon is likely to be extended after it expires next week. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing several sources familiar with the situation.

According to representatives of the Lebanese, Israeli and French governments involved in the ongoing talks, the Iranian-backed group and the Israelis are unlikely to resume full-scale fighting, even though they need more time to implement the initial terms of the truce, which began in late November.

A senior Israeli diplomat said talks were underway between the sides to extend the truce deadline to ensure the conflict would not resume. French officials and a source familiar with the discussions in Lebanon also said the truce would be extended.

On November 26, 2024, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the country had agreed to a ceasefire with Lebanon. He cited three reasons for the decision: the need to focus on the Iranian threat and rebuild the Israeli army’s resources, and the need to separate fronts and isolate the radical Palestinian group Hamas, which counted on Hezbollah to fight on its side.
