Italy’s League Party proposes withdrawal from WHO

The centre-right coalition-affiliated League party introduced a bill to withdraw Italy from the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday following new US President Donald Trump’s decision to leave the UN health agency.

At a press conference at the Chamber of Deputies in Rome, League senator Claudio Borghi accused the WHO of “excessive power” and failing to adequately fulfil its role of supporting peace, local media reported.

Politicians are counting on the support of their allies in the government and hope to create a “domino effect” after the American precedent. Claudio Borghi said:

“We have submitted a bill to the Senate to repeal the decree that binds us to the WHO. We will do everything we can to get it passed as soon as possible and I hope that a consesus will be reached with the allies.”

Meanwhile, the Head of the British Heritage Party, David Kurten, on social network X called for the UK to withdraw from the WHO following the United States.

On Monday, Trump took the oath of office and officially became the 47th president of the United States. Upon taking office, he cancelled dozens of decisions made by former US President Joe Biden and announced the introduction of a state of emergency on the border with Mexico and sending troops there.

The new head of state also signed a decree on the country’s withdrawal from the WHO. In his opinion, the US pays too much money to the organisation compared to other countries.
