Passenger plane catches fire at South Korean airport, 176 people evacuated

An Airbus aircraft belonging to South Korean airline Air Busan caught fire on Tuesday at Gimhae International Airport in the south of the country as it was preparing for a flight to Hong Kong, the fire service said.

The Air Busan was at Busan Airport and was preparing for a flight to Hong Kong. At that time, a fire broke out in the tail section of the aircraft. The flames quickly engulfed the entire board.

Local media began circulating a video that showed columns of smoke abruptly starting to rise from the board. In just a couple of minutes, the flames broke through the fuselage and open burning became visible.

There were 176 people inside at the time. All of them managed to save themselves, they evacuated from the aircraft by inflatable ladders.

The airline has 14 aircraft in its fleet. All Airbus of different modifications: A320-200, A321-200 and A321LR. All of them are also used by Russian airlines. According to preliminary data, an A321 went down in flames on Tuesday.

This is the second aircraft incident in a month. In late December 2024, a Jeju Air plane crashed at Muang airport. It was flying from Bangkok and on landing failed to brake due to landing gear problems. The Boeing-737 slammed into a fence outside the runway, followed by an explosion. There were 175 passengers and six crew members on board, most people died.
