UK support to rejoin the EU passes 55%, poll shows

Only 30 per cent of Britons believe that Britain’s exit from the European Union five years ago was the right decision, a YouGov poll released on Wednesday shows.

This is the lowest figure in any poll YouGov has conducted since the 2016 Brexit referendum, it said.

Meanwhile, 75 per cent of citizens aged 18-24 opposed Brexit. In addition, 62% of respondents consider Brexit as a failure rather than a success, 11% lean still towards success, 20% believe that it is neither a failure nor a success. The rest of the respondents found it difficult to answer.

Regarding the development of the UK’s co-operation with Europe, 55% of respondents are generally in favour of the country’s return to the EU, of which 39% are “strongly in favour” of this prospect.

The UK’s membership of the EU was terminated on January 31, 2020. The poll was conducted on January 20-21, 2025. It was attended by 2,225 adult Britons.

Earlier, the country’s Economic Secretary to the Treasury Tulip Siddique said that the UK has not yet faced 60 per cent of the consequences of leaving the European Union. According to her, the United Kingdom is waiting for the decline of the economy in the long term.

The Treasury Secretary said that the UK’s imports and exports would end up being 15 per cent lower than if the country had remained within the EU.

Analysts believe this is the first time the British government has assessed how much of an impact Brexit is currently having. They also saw Siddique’s forecasts as a wake-up call for ministers as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer seeks to reset relations with EU leaders.
