Crown Prince Christian arrives for military training back home in Denmark

Crown Prince Christian arrived at the Antvorskov Kaserne in Slagels on Monday for his four-month military service.

His Royal Highness will live in a room for four for the four months while the conscription lasts.

The Royal Household has confirmed that the Heir to the Throne will not receive a salary during his military service. Each conscript is entitled to a pre-tax salary of DKK 8997.33 per month, as well as a daily tax-free food allowance of DKK 263. Each room in the barracks can accommodate four conscripts. All living rooms have their own bathroom and toilet.

Major Lasse Galsgaard-Olsen, Chief of Staff of the Guards Hussar Regiment, said that on the first day of arrival, the conscripts are screened. They are then given a uniform and go through a basic physical test, a muscle test, a running test and then within the first week they start to learn about “the life of a soldier.”

They have to learn what it’s like to be in a garrison like this. How to address each other, how to read the weekly programme, where the different locations are and what the different pieces of equipment are called. Conscripts learn more about relationships, the army and security. They are also shown the cafeteria and told how the cash register and menus work. Where to go if someone is injured, sick or has lost something. This is all the conscripts learn during their first week of service, the major added.

On Friday, the conscripts are sent home from the barracks and on Monday morning they start their new programme again.

The four-month basic training includes many important steps. Major Galsgaard-Olsen said that all modules have something unique to offer, as it is new knowledge for everyone.

Crown Prince Christian and his new fellow soldiers from the February recruitment group will have many opportunities ahead of them once they complete their basic training.

King Frederick X was so keen on military service that after serving in the Guards Hussars, where he rose to sergeant and became a platoon commander, he applied to join the Danish Infantry Corps.
