Belgian police hunting two suspects after Brussels metro shooting

Several metro stations in Brussels were closed on Wednesday after gunfire at the Clemenceau central station, the Belgian prosecutor’s office said.

Brussels police were raised on alert after shots rang out at the Clemenceau metro station in the Anderlecht district.

At least two men wearing balaclavas over their faces were caught on CCTV cameras near the station. They were holding weapons that looked like Kalashnikov assault rifles. Witnesses said at least one gunshot was heard.

Authorities said metro lines 2 and 6 were interrupted between Trone station, near the European Parliament, and Gare de l’Ouest in Anderlecht (Brussels Midi, Delacroix and Clemenceau stations). In addition, trams 4 and 10 were stopped between Gare du Nord stations in Schaerbeke and Churchill in Ucla.

Tram lines 51 and 81 between Porte d’Anderlecht and Bruxelles Midi were also stopped. Authorities said the suspects may be in the metro tunnels.
