Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte was impeached on Wednesday following allegations of corruption and death threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family.
Members of the Philippine parliament voted in favour of Duterte’s impeachment. The charges follow Duterte was seen last year planning an attack on the president, his wife and the speaker of parliament, who is Marcos’ cousin. These developments have heightened political tensions in the country, which is a strategically important US ally in Asia.
Sara Duterte has strongly denied all the allegations and called the impeachment politically motivated. She claims it is an attempt to prevent her from becoming president in the next election. President Marcos has also denied any involvement in the impeachment process.
Duterte earlier said she hired an assassin to kill Marcos Jr. and his family if she is impeached.
