EU to allocate €310m to Moldova to help overcome energy crisis

The European Commission and Moldova agreed on a two-year Comprehensive Strategy for Energy Independence and Resilience worth €250 million for 2025, according to bne IntelliNews.

A further €60 million will go to Transnistria to cover 70 per cent of energy consumption by households and social institutions. The package was agreed after Moldova’s inability to settle debts led to Gazprom’s decision to halt gas exports to the country in early January.

The 2025 two-year strategy provides subsidies to households, public institutions and small businesses to compensate for high electricity prices.

In the longer term, the EU support will allow Moldova to improve its energy security through investments and reforms for the energy transition and ensure the full phase-out of Russian supply of energy resources.

Long-term support for improving Moldova’s energy security will be implemented until the end of 2026, according to the EU Commission. €15 million will be offered to companies in addition to government assistance, whereas a further €20 million will cover energy price increases paid by social institutions.

Additional funding of €60 million is also available to support the population of the Transnistrian region, subject to measures on fundamental freedoms and human rights. Transnistria will also need to adopt a plan to gradually bring electricity tariffs to market prices for consumers in the region.
