The Sarandi Canal, which flows in a Buenos Aires suburb, suddenly turned bright red and caused alarm among local residents on Friday.
Locals suggested that the colour could have been caused by the dumping of chemical waste or textile dye. One woman told reporters that she had seen coloured water in the canal before: “Bluish, a little greenish, pink, a little lilac, with a greasy film on top.”
This version has already been confirmed by the local authorities: in the water samples taken for analysis, they found aniline, which is used in the production of dyes, medicines, polymers. Meanwhile, the red water has already stretched all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.
The canal flows into the Rio de la Plata River, which runs next to the reserve.
