Trump’s call with Putin on the Ukraine conflict

US President Donald Trump recently revealed he spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In an exclusive interview aboard Air Force One, Trump confirmed the call but did not reveal how many times they had spoken.

Trump believes President Putin is genuinely concerned about the situation. “He wants to stop the killing,” he said. He added, “All those young, beautiful people, they’re like your kids – two million of them – and for no reason.” Trump emphasised the tragic toll of the conflict.

A plan to end the conflict

Trump stated the war in Ukraine “never would have happened” if he had been president in 2022. He criticised the current administration’s handling, calling President Biden’s approach a “complete embarrassment” for the United States.

Trump shared that he has a clear plan to end the war. He said, “Every day, people are dying. This war is so bad in Ukraine. I want to end this damn thing.” He also stressed the urgency of direct talks, stating, “Meetings must get going.” Trump highlighted the loss of life on both sides, saying, “Young men, just like my sons, on both sides, all over the battlefield.”

Potential economic deal with Ukraine

Trump also mentioned the possibility of a $500 million deal with Ukraine. This deal would grant the United States access to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals and gas reserves in exchange for security guarantees. Trump sees this as part of a larger effort to secure peace and stability in the region.

Next, US Vice President James David Vance will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Munich Security Conference, which will take place from 14 to 16 February. This meeting could play a key role in advancing peace talks and clarifying the US’s position on Ukraine.

Trump’s conversation with Putin has sparked global interest. His willingness to engage directly with Russia and his proposed peace plan demonstrate his commitment to resolving the conflict. The Munich Security Conference may provide an opportunity for progress, both diplomatically and economically.
