Egypt to host Arab summit on Palestine

Egypt will host an emergency Arab summit on 27th February to discuss recent developments in the Palestinian territories. The country’s foreign ministry announced the summit in a statement on Sunday.

Egypt has been working to build regional opposition to US President Donald Trump’s plan. The plan suggests relocating Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Egypt and Jordan, while placing US control over the area.

The foreign ministry said Egypt called the summit after consulting with various Arab countries, including Palestine. Palestine requested the summit to address the ongoing situation. Egypt also coordinated with Bahrain, which currently chairs the Arab League.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty travelled to Washington on Sunday for talks with senior US officials and members of Congress. The ministry said the visit aims to strengthen relations between Egypt and the US. Discussions will also cover regional issues.

On Friday, Abdelatty met with regional partners, including Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. They opposed any forced displacement of Palestinians from their land.

Last week, Trump proposed a US-controlled Gaza and suggested rebuilding it as the “Riviera of the Middle East.” He also proposed resettling Palestinians in Egypt and Jordan.

This idea has faced strong global criticism. Arab countries have rejected the proposal, reaffirming their support for a two-state solution with an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.
