At least 91 flights to New Chitose airport on the Japanese island of Hokkaido were cancelled on Tuesday due to strong wind and snowfall, local media reported.
By 5 p.m. local time, 91 flights had been cancelled as the meteorological agency said a winter atmospheric front had caused strong winds and heavy snowfall in the airport area, significantly reducing visibility, national broadcaster NHK reported.
Many passengers were stranded at the airport, forming long queues at airline counters in search of alternative flights, the report said.
Airlines advise passengers to check flight schedules on their websites.
