The European Commission will propose a new climate target this quarter to cut Europe’s emissions by 2040, the Commission press office said on Wednesday.
A Commission work programme published on Wednesday confirmed that the EU will amend its climate legislation this quarter, a long-planned move that would set a target for 2040 to keep countries on track to meet their goal of zero net emissions by 2050.
The Commission said it intends to propose that EU countries jointly reduce net emissions by 90 per cent by 2040 from 1990 levels. The EU has pledged to reduce net emissions by 55% by 2030.
The 2040 climate target will also be used to set the 2035 target, which all countries must submit to the UN this year as a national contribution to the Paris climate agreement.
