Chinese tech giant Huawei unveiled the industry’s first foldable phone at an event in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, which analysts called a symbolic victory amid ongoing disagreements with the United States over technology.
Huawei held a big presentation of new devices for the global market in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Specifically, the presentation showed off the Huawei Mate XT | Ultimate Design triple foldable smartphone, the Huawei MatePad Pro 13.2’ tablet, the Huawei Band 10 fitness bracelet and the Huawei FreeArc wireless headphones.
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design was the first mass-produced foldable smartphone with two hinges. The device’s body thickness when unfolded is only 3.6 mm, and the display diagonal is 10.2 inches. The design of the folding mechanism is made of strong steel, which has a deformation resistance of 1900 MPa.
Huawei, China’s first global tech brand, is at the centre of an ongoing battle between the US and China over trade and technology.
In 2019, Washington restricted Huawei’s access to US components and technology, including Google’s music and other smartphone services, making Huawei phones less attractive to users. It also banned global suppliers from using US technology to make components for Huawei.
US officials say Huawei poses a security threat, but the company denies this. China’s government has accused Washington of misusing security warnings to rein in a growing rival to US technology companies.
