Pope Francis’s health remains a concern as he is currently receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for pneumonia and chronic bronchitis. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted after experiencing a severe respiratory crisis.
Although his condition remains serious, the Vatican reports that Pope Francis is eating well and stays alert.
In a message from his hospital bed, the Pope thanked the medical staff at Gemelli and those around the world for their prayers. “I am continuing my treatment at Gemelli with confidence. Rest is also part of my recovery!” he said. He also expressed gratitude for the many messages of support, especially from children who sent letters and drawings.
Health concerns persist
Doctors say Pope Francis is not in immediate danger, but he is still not out of danger. They are most concerned about the risk of infection developing into sepsis. Professor Sergio Alfieri said the Pope’s condition has improved slightly, but he will remain in hospital for at least another week.
This ongoing health issue has raised questions about Pope Francis’s ability to continue leading the Catholic Church.
The Pope’s absence from leading Sunday prayers for the second week in a row has led to rumours about his future. However, Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin dismissed these claims. He said the focus remains on the Pope’s recovery. Instead of leading the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis prepared a message to be read during the service.
