Pope’s condition slightly improved, Vatican says

Pope Francis’ test results showed a slight improvement, but his condition remains serious, Vatican News reported citing the Holy See’s press office.

The 88-year-old pontiff has been in Rome’s Agostino Gemelli hospital for the 11th day with bilateral pneumonia. According to the Vatican, he continues to receive oxygen, but his oxygen supply has been slightly reduced and the slight kidney failure identified earlier is not a concern.

The pontiff is awake and well orientated, but the prognosis remains uncertain due to the complexity of the clinical picture and waiting for the effect of treatment, Vatican officials said.

In the morning the pontiff participated in Holy Mass in specially equipped quarters of the hospital, where he was under the supervision of hospital staff.

On the morning of February 24, the Vatican reported that Pope Francis had spent the past night well at the Agostino Gemelli Clinic.

“The night went well, he slept well and is now resting,” the press office said.

Pope Francis was hospitalised on February 14 with a respiratory tract infection and was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia a few days later. Also in his blood tests were recorded problems with platelets, caused by anaemia, and against the background of the disease developed kidney failure. The condition of the Pope is assessed as critical.
