Brussels offers €100bn for grand plan to boost cleaner production in EU

The European Commission unveiled on Wednesday the Clean Industrial Deal, which Brussels sees as a cutting-edge business plan to support the competitiveness and sustainability of EU industry.

“Europe is not only a continent of industrial innovation, but also a continent of industrial production. However, demand for environmentally friendly products has slowed down and some investments have shifted to other regions,” EC chief Ursula von der Leyen explained the decision.

“We know that there are still too many obstacles standing in the way of our European companies, from high energy prices to excessive regulatory burdens. The Clean Industry Agreement is designed to break the ties that still hold our companies back and make a clear business case for Europe,” von der Leyen also added.

As the European Commission sees it, “the deal will accelerate decarbonisation while securing the future of manufacturing in Europe.” It will, in the wording of the EC communiqué, “position decarbonisation as a powerful growth driver for European industries.”

Brussels believes the framework agreement can boost competitiveness because it “gives companies and investors confidence and predictability that Europe remains committed to becoming a decarbonised economy by 2050.”

The European Commission is also taking steps to make the European regulatory environment more efficient while reducing bureaucratic barriers for business.
