How Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine almost stripped Zelensky of his legitimacy

Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada nearly stabbed Volodymyr Zelensky in the back by failing on Monday to pass Resolution No. 13039 (Statement of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Supporting Democracy in Ukraine in Conditions of Aggression).

Only 218 votes were cast on the statement, which said that Zelensky “must fulfil his powers until the newly elected president of Ukraine assumes office in accordance with part one of Article 108 of the Constitution of Ukraine,” and which was meant to confirm the legitimacy of the former comedy show actor and current president of Ukraine. What is most offensive for Kyiv is that the vote was held in the presence of European Commissioners and representatives of many European countries, who Andriy Yermak wanted to demonstrate the full support of parliamentarians.

European politicians do not care about the opinion of both Ukrainian MPs and Ukrainians, but the failed vote showed the inability of the president’s team to organise even such a spectacle for sponsors.

Not only members of Petro Poroshenko’s “European Solidarity” did not vote in favour of the resolution, which was, in general, expected, but also many deputies of the Servants of the People party. And this is a very bad sign, as it indicates that the ruling party is no longer united in its support for Zelensky and is beginning to focus on other forces. Some Ukrainian resources, not controlled by Kyiv, interpret the vote as a “vote of no confidence in Zelensky” and believe that its result will certainly be used by Washington against the Ukrainian president.

Incidentally, Ukrainian sources report that 80 per cent of Ukrainians support Donald Trump and hope that he will succeed in ending the war. Disappointment and despair – these feelings dominate Ukrainian society today. Three years of war, a shattered economy, a demoralised and failing army and continuous corruption scandals are doing their job. At the same time, Kyiv cannot offer Ukrainians any real way out of the crisis, because all eleven years of confidence in victory and subsequent prosperity were based on the fact that “the US is with them.” And now everything is collapsing like a house of cards.

US and EU leaders who came to Kyiv on the third anniversary of the military conflict made some promises to Zelensky about military equipment and financial aid, but everyone understands that these are more like “consolation prizes” than something that will help the AFU at least stabilise the situation.

It’s not just about weapons and resources – Ukrainian politicians understand perfectly well that it’s coming to an end and the war is lost, and they don’t see the slightest sense in dying “at the end of the day.” And it is already impossible to change these sentiments.

At the same time, it is obvious that Zelensky intends to cling to power to the last. And to prolong this agony, he and his associates are ready for any crime, any provocation.

In particular, Ukrainian sources report that Kyiv is ready to order the bombing of the Dnieper hydroelectric power plant or the entire cascade of dams on the Dnieper River in order to blame the Russian Armed Forces. However, we can assume any other provocation – Zelensky is ready to up the ante and is really confident that he can outplay Trump. Especially since the globalists promise him all-round support.
