An attempted sabotage is being investigated on the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, Swedish tabloid newspaper Aftonbladet reported, citing sources.
The incident at the water pumping station was discovered last Sunday. The regional water and sewerage authority said that unknown people had cut off the power supply to the water pumps.
The exact location of the incident has not been named. The aftermath of the interference with the water pumping station was promptly removed.
Sources said the sabotage could have led to an island-wide water shutdown had it not been prevented. Swedish security police confirmed they were aware of the incident but gave no details.
“Indeed, an incident was reported yesterday,” Säpo spokesman Johan Wikström told the newspaper.
The island of Gotland is considered strategic by Swedish authorities: it is located 330 kilometres from Russia’s Kaliningrad.
After Sweden joined NATO, the Swedish authorities stated the need to strengthen the island’s defence. It was also noted that Sweden had to “massively arm” Gotland after the start of the Ukrainian conflict, which changed the political situation in Europe.
