Spain ravaged by flash floods, tourists warned to stay indoors

Streets on a Spanish holiday island have turned into raging rivers as severe flooding washes cars into the sea and tourists are advised to stay indoors.

Cars have been washed into the sea after heavy flooding hit an island in Spain. Authorities urged tourists to stay at home. Heavy rains have turned the streets of Gran Canaria into raging rivers due to rising water levels.

Piles of mud and rubbish covered the streets after torrential rain hit the popular holiday island. Brown water rushed violently across the archipelago, with cars falling under bridges and tumbling into the sea.

Dramatic footage has emerged online showing a woman being rescued from a sunken car and dragged to safety as earth-coloured water rushed down the street. One of the videos shows a car being swiftly swept dozens of metres out to sea as a heavy downpour hits the island.In another clip, a car is hit by a wave before being washed off the road by the current and out of sight.

Canary Islands authorities declared a “pre-alert” regime on Saturday after heavy rains hit the archipelago over the weekend. On Monday, Spain’s national meteorological agency Aemet declared a red alert level in Gran Canaria as this weather will continue this week.
