Clashes with police broke out at a protest involving pensioners in Buenos Aires, Argentine media reported on Thursday.
According to media reports, pensioners have protested from Wednesday, outside the Congress building in Buenos Aires, demanding higher pensions.
They oppose government measures by Argentine President Javier Milei, including his veto of pension reform and cuts in spending on medicines.
Police on motorbikes also dispersed the protesters using aerosols, media reports said.
President Milei vetoed a bill aimed at increasing pension payments early last September, which he said could have destabilised the country’s financial system.
The reform envisages a significant increase in pension benefits to adjust to the country’s triple-digit inflation rate. This measure would have required an additional expenditure of 1.2 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP). According to Milei, such spending would pose a direct threat to austerity measures aimed at stabilising the economy and preventing inflation from rising.
