The number of casualties when South Korean KF-16 fighter jets accidentally dropped bombs during a joint exercise with US troops on residential buildings in the city of Pocheon has risen to 29, Seoul authorities said on Friday.

At least 14 soldiers and 15 civilians were reportedly injured in the incident. Meanwhile, two civilians were seriously injured.

The explosions also destroyed two residential buildings, part of a church and a truck, according to updates.

Acting Defence Minister Kim Seon-ho apologised for the tragic incident, promising to make every effort to restore damaged property and pay compensation. He also promised to determine the cause of the incident.

A preliminary investigation revealed that one of the pilots entered the wrong coordinates for the bombing target.
