Nissan’s new CEO vows faster turnaround as automaker seeks revival

Incoming Nissan chief executive Ivan Espinosa has pledged to accelerate decision-making and revitalise the struggling Japanese automaker’s model lineup, according to AP News.

The 46-year-old Mexican executive, who takes the helm on 1 April, told reporters at Nissan’s technical centre in Atsugi that the company must develop stronger “empathy” in its corporate culture and work “hand in hand” as a unified team. His comments come as Nissan projects a full-year loss for the current fiscal period ending in March.

Espinosa emphasised the need for quicker development cycles, pledging to bring new vehicles to market within 37 months and derivative models within 30 months. The company showcased several upcoming models for global markets, including hybrids, plug-ins and electric vehicles as part of its recovery strategy.

The new CEO inherits a company still grappling with the aftermath of the Carlos Ghosn scandal and subsequent leadership turmoil. Ghosn’s arrest in 2018 and the resignation of his successor Hiroto Saikawa over compensation issues have left lasting scars. Outgoing CEO Makoto Uchida, who steered the company since 2019, steps down as Nissan faces renewed financial pressures.

While ruling out a previously considered holding company structure with Honda, Espinosa expressed openness to collaborations both within and outside the automotive sector. The company confirmed it would maintain technology cooperation with Honda despite abandoning broader integration plans.

The roadmap includes leveraging Nissan’s electric vehicle expertise from models like the Leaf while introducing advanced technologies including autonomous driving systems.
