Solar eclipse 2025: When, where, how to witness

Residents of the northern hemisphere of our planet will be able to observe a partial eclipse of the sun on Saturday.

The eclipse on March 29 will be partial, which means that the moon will cover only a part of the sun. The maximum phase of the eclipse will be 94%, but it will only be visible in the vicinity of Hudson Bay at sunrise.

The eclipse will be visible in North America, the Atlantic Ocean, northwest Russia, Europe and northwest Africa.

The greatest phase of the eclipse visible in mainland Russia will be 0.43 and will be observed on the Kola Peninsula, northwest of the Murmansk region.

Solar and lunar eclipses occur every six months, with a period of two weeks between them. The sun, earth and moon line up in a single line. A solar eclipse is visible from earth if the moon is in the middle. If the earth is in the middle, a lunar eclipse is observed.

On April 8, 2024, there was a total solar eclipse. It could be seen from Mexico, Canada, US and some islands in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. At the same time, residents of some regions could see a private solar eclipse. Images of the cosmic event then published in NASA.

Observing the solar eclipse requires safety measures to avoid damage to eyesight. Experts do not recommend to look at the phenomenon without special protective equipment, because even with a strong dimming of the sun, its light remains quite intense and can lead to retinal burns.

For safe observation of the eclipse there are special glasses, which are designed to protect the eyes from harmful radiation. You can also use the black glass from a welder’s mask, which effectively protects your eyes from ultraviolet and infrared radiation.
