Australia to hold general elections on May 3

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has officially announced the date Australians will go to the polls.

On Friday morning, Albanese informed Governor-General Sam Mostyn of his intention to set a date for the vote.

“The world has thrown many challenges at Australia over the past few years,” Albanese told a press conference outside Parliament House. He also added:

“In uncertain times, we can’t solve the challenges we face, but we can determine how we respond to them. Now, on 3 May, you choose the path.”

Labour has 77 of the 151 seats in the House of Representatives. The Opposition has 53 MPs, with a further 19 MPs who are neither Labour nor Coalition.

Albanese will be seeking a second consecutive term as prime minister.

In nearly a century, no party has lost its majority in Parliament after one term, but Opposition Leader Peter Dutton is hoping for a change in power. Dutton led the Coalition for three years.

The election was previously expected to be held in April, but due to Hurricane Alfred hitting Queensland and northern New South Wales, the Prime Minister postponed calling the election.

The postponement of the election also led to the government passing a budget that includes tax cuts for all workers from July 2026.
