Serbia to form new government by Easter, Đuro Macut named as prime minister

President Aleksandar Vučić announced on Sunday that Serbia would have a new government in place by 18 April, with Đuro Macut, a political newcomer, set to take the role of prime minister, according to Politico.

The move comes after the previous administration collapsed in March amid widespread public protests and growing discontent over corruption and democratic backsliding.

Vučić emphasised the challenges facing the new administration, stating that its primary objectives would be to maintain peace and stability while steering Serbia back toward economic prosperity.

It will be a big task for the new government to continue to preserve peace and stability, to act patiently and forbearingly. The government should have a clear commitment to the future, and our desire and intention is to return Serbia to the pedestal of the winner and the fastest growing economy by the end of the year.

Macut, an endocrinologist with no prior political experience, is expected to remain in office until at least 2027, when Serbia is due to hold simultaneous parliamentary and presidential elections. Lawmakers have until 18 April to approve his appointment. Failure to comply could trigger an early election.

Vučić also revealed that he anticipates meeting US President Donald Trump in the coming months, where he plans to address recently imposed tariffs.

On 2 April, as part of a broader US tariff policy affecting multiple nations, Trump announced a 38% levy on Serbian goods, set to take effect this week. The rate is the highest imposed on any European country, though some overseas territories of European nations will face even steeper tariffs.
