Support for Welsh independence surged, new poll shows

A majority of people in Wales would vote in favour of independence if the country re-joined the European Union, a poll by pro-independence campaigners has revealed.

The poll, commissioned by YesCymru, comes ahead of a planned pro-independence march in Barry, south Wales, on April 26.

Asked whether Wales should be an independent state, 51 per cent of those polled said yes if the country were to return to Europe.

The group says this is the first time a majority has supported independence, but the question in the poll asked if Wales would re-join the EU, despite the majority of Welsh people voting in favour of leaving the EU in the 2016 referendum.

The same poll showed 41 per cent would vote in favour if the referendum on Welsh independence was held tomorrow.

YesCymru chair Phyl Griffiths said: “While YesCymru does not take a position on EU membership, this result shows that when people are presented with a clear post-independence scenario, support for independence grows.”
