Nuclear deal: Iran gives diplomacy “genuine chance”

Iran is giving diplomacy a “genuine chance,” a move that should be appreciated by the US side, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on Friday.

The US and Iran will meet on the nuclear agreement on Saturday, with the meeting to be held in Oman.

“In earnest & with candid vigilance we are giving diplomacy a genuine chance,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei wrote on X on Friday. “We intend to assess the other side’s intent & resolve this Saturday,” Baqaei also said.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry also added that Tehran will assess Washington’s position in the upcoming consultation, followed by a response.

Iran may propose to discuss an interim nuclear deal at the upcoming talks with the US in Oman, Axios portal quoted sources as saying.

According to them, Iranian authorities believe it is unrealistic to agree a “technically complex” comprehensive deal in two months and they want more time to avoid escalation.

Earlier, President Donald Trump threatened Iran with unprecedented bombings and called for a nuclear deal. The US unilaterally withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, with the JCPOA expiring at the end of 2025 for all participants.

The media earlier reported that US President Donald Trump, during a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in February, asked that Russia become an intermediary in talks with Iran over the country’s nuclear programme.
