Two amateur archaeologists found 2000-year-old treasure in Romania

Two amateur archaeologists have found an ancient treasure in central Romania, near the municipality of Breaza, Archaeology News reported.

Dionisie-Aurel Moldovan and Sebastian-Adrian Zăhan became friends because of a common love for the search for antiquities with metal detectors. They accidentally discovered and dug up treasure about two thousand years old.

Under the ground in the district of MureÈ™ lay silver jewellery – six pieces in all: a wide bracelet with plant ornaments, three fibulae (brooches), a chain with pendants and a belt consisting of alternating oval and round plates with a rectangular buckle decorated with a pattern. The total weight of the find is about 550 grams. It was handed over to the local museum.

In addition to its artistic value, the jewellery has become an important historical evidence. The shape and ornamentation of the items indicate their belonging to the Dacian kingdom. And this, in turn, changes the ideas about its borders. Now scientists know for sure that there was a Dacian settlement on the territory of the MureÈ™ district. It is assumed that the jewellery belonged to a high-ranking member of Dacian society, probably from the aristocracy.

The treasure not only confirms the presence of the Dacians in the region, but also provides valuable information about the culture and social structure of their society in this part of ancient Dacia, corresponding to modern Romania and Moldova.
