Czech authorities launched an investigation into Filip Turek, a member of the European Parliament (MEP), after he shared a photo on Instagram appearing to show his car’s speedometer at over 200 km/h, according to Euractiv.
Turek, who represents the Motorists for Themselves party, initially claimed the image was captured in Germany, where certain stretches of autobahn have no speed limits. However, social media users quickly contested this, identifying the location as the D5 motorway in Czechia’s Pilsen region, a road with a 130 km/h limit.
Czech police confirmed they are examining whether the MEP violated traffic laws.
When questioned by the Czech news outlet Seznam Zprávy, Turek did not clarify where the photo was taken but admitted to frequently driving at speeds exceeding 300 km/h in Germany. The same investigation uncovered older videos, recorded before his election as an MEP, which appear to show him driving above 300 km/h on Czech roads.
The controversial post drew sharp criticism from politicians and members of the public, with some Instagram users responding by sharing their own videos of reckless driving. Turek further fuelled the backlash by reposting some of those clips.
In response, Czech police issued multiple statements on X, emphasising that “recklessness simply does not belong on our roads” and urging high-profile individuals to set a responsible example.
