Mark Carney’s Liberals win Canadian election

Canada’s ruling Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, has won the country’s parliamentary elections, Canadian media reported on Tuesday.

The Liberals, led by Mark Carney, retained power, winning enough seats in the 45th federal election to form a new government.

While the final results of the vote have not yet been announced, it remains unclear whether the Liberals will form a majority or minority government. To form a majority government, a party must win 172 seats.

On Monday, Canadians were electing the members of the lower house of parliament. The last House of Commons had 338 seats, but that number was increased to 343 for this year’s election.

The main battle in the election is between four parties: the Liberal Party, the Conservative Party, the New Democratic Party and the Bloc Québécois. According to Canadian media, only the Liberals and Conservatives have a chance of winning a majority of the 172 seats.

According to the latest pre-election polls, the Liberal Party could win about 42% of the vote, while the Conservatives could win 39%. The leader of the party that wins the majority will become the next prime minister.

Carney has previously spoken out against co-operation between Canada and Russia in the Arctic, as well as against President Donald Trump, while supporting Ukraine in its military conflict.

The next Canadian parliamentary elections were scheduled for October 2025, but after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned as head of government and leader of the ruling Liberal Party in early March, his successor Carney announced snap elections.
